Sixth Grade Explores Marine Science at SoundWaters & Cove Island Park

Hands-On Marine Science, Discovery, and Environmental Stewardship Along the Stamford Shoreline

Our sixth grade students recently enjoyed an incredible hands-on science field trip to SoundWaters and Cove Island Park in Stamford with Mrs. Petrillo. The day was filled with discovery, teamwork, and unforgettable marine science experiences!

Students impressed the SoundWaters staff with their extensive knowledge of horseshoe crab anatomy and biology. One of the highlights of the day was participating in a fascinating simulation lab where students explored the connection between human blood and horseshoe crab blood. Through the activity, they tested medicines for bacteria and learned how horseshoe crab blood plays an important role in ensuring the safety of medical products.

The adventure continued as students traveled to three different shoreline locations to participate in seining activities. Equipped with waders, boots, and life jackets, students went chest-high into the water using seining nets and scoop nets to safely capture living marine organisms. They then worked together to observe, identify, and classify the species they discovered, bringing their classroom learning to life in an exciting and meaningful way.

One especially memorable moment came when students spotted a horseshoe crab stranded on the shore and unable to flip itself back over. Working together, they carefully helped rescue the crab and return it safely to the water, a perfect example of stewardship and compassion for marine life.

The weather turned out to be absolutely perfect, making for a beautiful day outdoors filled with scientific observation, investigation, and exploration. Our students represented St. Rose School wonderfully, and everyone returned with new knowledge, great memories, and a deeper appreciation for marine ecosystems.
