Mrs. Winington's Second Grade Explores Newtown's Rich History
A step back in time to discover the people, places, and stories that shaped Newtown's history.

Mrs. Winington's second-grade class recently took learning beyond the classroom during a walking field trip to several historic sites in Newtown.
The day began with a visit to the Matthew Curtiss House, a historic home constructed in 1750 that preserves many fascinating pieces of Connecticut history. Students toured the home room by room while a volunteer from the Newtown Historical Society shared stories and insights about daily life in Newtown more than 200 years ago. They learned how families lived, worked, cooked, and completed everyday tasks during colonial times, gaining a deeper appreciation for the area's rich heritage.
The class also visited Edmond Town Hall, where they explored additional chapters of Newtown's history. Students learned about the town's first post office, police headquarters, jail, movie theater, and other important landmarks and events that helped shape the community they call home today.
This hands-on learning experience allowed students to connect their classroom studies to real-life historical sites while developing a greater understanding of Newtown's past. We are grateful to the Newtown Historical Society and Edmond Town Hall for helping bring local history to life for our students.
Learning about the people, places, and stories that helped build our community was a memorable experience and a wonderful way for Mrs. Winington's second-grade class to explore history right in their own backyard.
