Hands-On Science Learning Comes to Life at St. Rose School
Exploring Earth, Life, and Science Through Hands-On Discovery
At St. Rose School, our middle school students are discovering that science is far more than reading from a textbook, it is about exploration, investigation, and real-world learning experiences that spark curiosity and deepen understanding. Under the guidance of middle school science teacher Mrs. Petrillo, students across grades 6–8 have been immersed in engaging, hands-on learning experiences that bring science to life in meaningful and memorable ways.
Grade 7 Explores Anatomy Through Eye Dissection
Students recently participated in a sheep eye dissection lab, where they had the opportunity to closely examine the anatomy of the eye and better understand how vision works. This engaging lab allowed students to identify key structures and observe firsthand the complexity of the visual system.
The lab experience was made even more special with the assistance of four dedicated Grade 8 teaching assistants, Camden, Madison, Isabella, and Marcus, who helped guide students throughout the activity and supported their younger peers during the investigation.
Grade 8 Travels Through Earth’s History
Students have been studying Earth science by creating geological time scales that showcase the major eras of Earth’s history. Through this project, students explored how life and the planet have changed over billions of years while gaining a deeper appreciation for the immense scale of geological time.
Their creative and detailed timelines demonstrated both scientific understanding and artistic presentation skills as they connected major events in Earth’s development.
Grade 6 Prepares for Long Island Sound Field Trip
In preparation for their upcoming field trip to Long Island Sound, Grade 6 students have been immersed in several exciting marine science activities.
Students selected one of the six habitats found within Long Island Sound, created detailed dioramas, and presented their research to classmates. These presentations allowed students to explore the diverse ecosystems that make the Sound such an important natural environment.
Students also participated in a horseshoe crab lab with Mrs. Petrillo, joined by our Principal, Dr. G. During the lab, students observed a preserved horseshoe crab, studied its anatomy, and learned about the unique role horseshoe crab blood plays in the medical field. This fascinating lesson helped students connect marine biology to real-world medical applications while preparing them for the scientific investigations they will complete during their field trip.
Mrs. Petrillo’s commitment to experiential learning continues to inspire curiosity, collaboration, and excitement in her students. Through creative labs, interactive projects, and meaningful scientific exploration, St. Rose students are developing the critical thinking skills and enthusiasm that help foster a lifelong love of learning.
