Spooky Science Brings Halloween Magic to St. Rose School!

October 30, 2026
By Lisa Jackson

Ghosts that fly, invisible potions, and a little Halloween magic made for an unforgettable day of hands-on science at St. Rose School!

Our third- and sixth-grade students came together for a special Spooky Science celebration, combining Halloween excitement with scientific discovery, creativity, and the joy of learning alongside their grade-level buddies.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Petrillo and Mrs. Cocchiola, students transformed the science lab into a place where a little Halloween magic helped bring important scientific concepts to life!

A Little Magic, A Lot of Science!

Throughout the experience, students participated in three exciting experiments that challenged them to observe, question, and discover the science behind seemingly magical results.

Flying Ghosts: Students watched their ghosts take flight while learning about convection and how the movement of warm air can create surprising effects.

Invisible Potion: With a little science magic, students used a chemical reaction to create an invisible gas capable of extinguishing a candle flame without blowing on it!

Magical Toothpick Stars: Students explored water absorption and mechanical movement as they watched toothpicks transform into star shapes.

Each experiment encouraged curiosity, observation, and problem-solving, demonstrating that science can be both educational and incredibly entertaining!

Our Teachers Bring the Magic!

Of course, no Spooky Science celebration would be complete without a few special witches and wizards!

Mrs. Petrillo and Mrs. Cocchiola brought their own bewitching powers to the lab, creating a fun and engaging learning experience for everyone. Student volunteers even had the opportunity to become magical wizards themselves, helping perform experiments and reveal the science behind the magic.

The excitement, laughter, and amazement throughout the room made the experience especially memorable.

Learning Together, Growing Together

One of the most meaningful aspects of this activity was the opportunity for our sixth-grade and third-grade buddies to learn together.

At St. Rose School, our buddy activities build relationships across grade levels while encouraging teamwork, kindness, leadership, and a strong sense of school community.

Our older students had the opportunity to support and encourage their younger buddies, while everyone shared in the excitement of scientific discovery.

Spooky Science was a wonderful reminder that some of the most meaningful learning happens when students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover together.

A special thank you to Mrs. Petrillo and Mrs. Cocchiola for bringing science to life in such a creative and memorable way!
