St. Rose Home and School Association

 Mr. John Moulder
President, St. Rose School Home School Association

                                                                                September 2007

Dear Families,

A new school year has dawned!  These are exciting days at St. Rose school, with building improvements, curriculum enhancements and the blessings of an ever-growing family of students, parents and faculty. It is a joy to be a part of such a vital environment and we at the Home and School Association are delighted to have you on board.

One of the most exceptional things about St. Rose is the high level of family involvement in all aspects of the school.  To this end, the Home and School Association (HSA) is the glue between faculty and parents.   The Board is elected annually (by school families)  and consists of four school parents, our Principal, Mrs. Mary Maloney, a pre-school parent and our Pre-School Director, Sister Thaddeus Rajca.  The current HSA board includes John Moulder, President; Ann Ragusa, Vice President, Terry Tortora, Treasurer and Theresa Ludanyi, Secretary.  All school parents are eligible to be members and we urge you to give some thought to running for one of these offices during the elections in Spring 2008.

The HSA board meets monthly to discuss the needs of the school and to plan a variety of social and fundraising activities designed to raise money and bring people together throughout the year.  The Catholic Schools Walk-a-Thon is our major fundraiser which takes place every October.  All monies raised from the Walk-a-Thon and other fundraisers are applied to key projects around the school and in the classrooms such as building renovations, new technology purchases (Smart Boards, computers, etc.), playground equipment and many others.  Our Association collects an annual family fee in an effort to reduce the number of fundraisers throughout the year.

Our first social gathering of the year is the Sock Hop, a 50’s-style family night out complete with poodle skirts, retro candies, hoola hoop contests and great dance music.  Mark your calendars for Friday, September 28, 7-10 at the parish hall.   If you have a knack for decorating or are itching to get involved from the start, volunteers are always welcome.  Hope to see you there!

Studies show that one of the biggest factors in a child’s success at school is parental involvement.  Here at St. Rose, there is truly something for everyone.  We believe in listening to your ideas and implementing programs and events that showcase a wide variety of opportunities.  We are proud of the many programs that we can offer our children, many of which are spearheaded by our talented parents.  Here is just a sampling of the activities in which you can become active:

·       Walk-a-Thon

·       Cultural Arts Committee

·       Book Fairs

·       Sock Hop

·       Family-to-Family Ministry

·       Chess Club

·       Yearbook/Publicity

·       Choral Club

·       Art Club

·       Class Parent

·       Lunch Volunteers

·       Teacher Appreciation Week

·       Catholic Schools Week

·       Field Day

·       Golf Tournament

·       Scouts

We encourage your attendance at the four HSA general meetings during the course of the school year, typically in September, November, February and May.    Take these opportunities to hear, first-hand, what is happening at the school and use the time to voice your questions and concerns.  Every parent is a member of the HSA and therefore every family should be represented at these meetings!  We look forward to seeing you at the first meeting, Thursday, September 20,6:00 p.m. in the parish hall, followed by an open house.

We hope this letter gives you a sense of the St. Rose School HSA.  Our sincerest welcome is with you and your family, as is our intense hope that you will take your membership to heart and let your voice be heard.  Feel free to contact any of our officers at any time.

God bless.

Sincerely,

John F. Moulder, President

Ann Ragusa, Vice President

Terry Tortora, Treasurer

Theresa Ludanyi, Secretary

The Saint Rose School Home School Association, (HSA), is the primary parent-teacher organization for the school, including the Pre-School.  All school parents are eligible to be members.  We conduct quarterly general meetings, as well as monthly board meetings that are open to all parents and faculty.  The board consists of four school parents, the Principal, a pre-school parent, and the Pre-School Director.

Fundraising

Our Association organizes fund-raisers and collects the annual family fee, which goes directly to supplement tuition for the costs of educating the children.  The Catholic Schools Walk-A-Thon is our major fund-raiser held at the start of the school year.  75% of the funds raised are allocated to the school while the remaining 25% is distributed to the Connecticut Federation of Catholic schools.

We are also involved in raising funds for special school projects.  Such projects have included the equipment for construction of a new playground (which the parents constructed) and hardware for our state-of-the-art computer lab.  Current projects include funding for a new field house.

Coordinated Communication

The HSA provides a means for coordinating communication between the parents, Principal, teachers, and the staff of the school.  For example, when the bus route change impacted our students at the start of this year, HSA coordinated the parent response to the Newtown Board of Education in conjunction with our administration.

Social Activities

Finally, we help to arrange social gatherings for the St. Rose School families.  Our activities include hospitality, sunshine, Walk-a-Thon, Craft Fair, Teacher Appreciation Week, Field Day, Catholic School Week, Book Fair, Golf Tournament, and lunch duty.

Studies show that one of the biggest factors in a child’s success at school is parental involvement in the school.  Here at St. Rose, we provide multiple opportunities for parents to be involved, with activities that include daytime or nighttime participation. We look forward to seeing you.
