The Intermediate School: Grades 5
and 6
Although fifth grade students remain in
a self-contained classroom, they are introduced to some of the methods,
abstract thinking and curriculum structure that occurs at the sixth grade
level, including foreign language classes. The D.A.R.E. program and
Invention Convention are only two examples of the types of activities
introduced in order to encourage higher level thinking and
problem-solving. Students begin to learn to write in a formal style and
are taught specific organizational and study skill techniques. Students
in our sixth grade program begin the middle school experience of
departmentalized classes. The sixth grade program further encourages
abstract thinking, organizational skills, responsibility, and
experimentation, while promoting personal growth and peer identity.
Leadership and oral communication skills play a large role in the
education experience in sixth grade.
