February Newsletter

Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that February is upon is. I feel like just yesterday the children were preparing for Christmas! Thank you to everyone who has helped with in Catholic Schools Week. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to affirm our commitment to a faith-based education not only during this week but all school year long. As we begin the month of February, we will explore the themes of friendship, family and Valentines Day.

Language:
The letters O, P, Q and R will be introduced this month. Thank you for helping reinforce the letters and sounds at home. The children have become very involved in learning the letter of the week and its corresponding sound. Every Monday we make a word wall with pictures beside the letter. The children share words that are amazing! This month we will also work on knowing addresses and telephone numbers. Attached you will find a short activity to do at home to help your child learn his or her own address. I am hoping to plan a field trip to the post office so that the children can explore it and have an opportunity to mail a note home. More details will follow.

Math/Science
This month we will focus on sequencing and taking simple measurements. Winter is filled with unique opportunities for scientific learning and this month we will experiment with frozen water, learn about snowflakes, frost and melting snow (granted we get some more before March).

Religion:
Session 18 “Joseph Forgives his Brothers” Like Joseph, we can forgive those who hurt us.
Session 19 “Joseph Is Kind to His Father” When others I care about are sad, I can help make them happy again.
Session 20 “Jesus Teaches Us to Love Other” I can be a friend to others as Jesus is a friend to me.

We will be participating in Valentines Day activities. I will be sending home a list of classmates. We will have a mailbox set up in the classroom in which the children can place their Valentines. Valentine cards may be sent in from now until Tuesday, February 14th. Please check calendars for important dates this month.

Finally, I have finally received a bill from Scholastic for Weekly Readers. I was waiting to bill everyone until I had the exact amount. Included in the cost are journals that I purchased for writing activities during the year. I am asking that each student pay $9.50. If you have any questions or concerns about this please see me.

Prayer:

Lord God, It’s difficult to understand how people can be cruel and hurt others. Help me to understand others’ feelings, as well as my own, and help me teach these children about forgiveness. Amen
